ABOUT US
An evolution of community arts.
Sharing Memories Group, established in the mid 1990s and is made up of older people living in the rural Holme Valley on the outskirts of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
We see the value in everyone. We want to be a catalyst for positive change, since our beginnings we’ve been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our Arts Organization upon: support, empowerment, positive change and sharing. The aim of the group is to bring together older people to share their memories of the past with each other and with the wider community and to use these shared memories as a basis for creating high quality art works. With the support of three artists, Sharing Memories works with local schools and other community groups on a range of projects which serve to both celebrate and interpret our lives and our locality.
RECENT CHANGES
In the past four years we have started to work with adults recovering from mental health issues, other older people and both children and adults with learning disabilities. Because of the nature of these groups they can become isolated from mainstream society and stigmatised as a result of their condition or behaviour. Sharing Memories offers them opportunities to work together, develop new relationships, learn new skills and celebrate their lives and experiences.
